Priories in Odense

By the end of the Middle Ages, Odense – with just about 5000 inhabitants – had 6 priories (monasteries or nunneries). These institutions were situated in the town center, by the Cathedral, the Franciscan Monastery, St. Hans’ Church, and on the Dominican Square, right in the middle of today’s city center. The guide explains the significance of religious leaders as they handled hospital and social services and introduced monks from abroad who brought new cultural trends, construction techniques, and the art of writing.
